Choosing a cruise

Virgin Voyages vs Celebrity for an adults’ cruise

By Cruise.do · Updated

The short answer

Virgin is the clearer choice when an adults-only ship is a requirement. Celebrity remains worth comparing when you welcome a mixed-age ship and a particular itinerary or cabin appeals more.

Adults-only is a policy, not a mood

Virgin markets its sailings to guests aged 18 and over. Celebrity welcomes families and operates a children’s and teen programme. See Virgin’s age positioning and Celebrity’s Camp at Sea information.

That difference settles the decision for some travellers. For others, it is less important than the route or ship. Do not infer that an adults-only ship is always quiet, or that a family-friendly ship cannot suit a couple seeking a relaxed holiday. Neither label tells you the volume of a particular venue at a particular hour.

Compare two actual sailings

Choose dates, departure ports and cabin categories before comparing the brands. A short weekend trip and a longer destination-heavy voyage may attract different holiday plans even on the same line. Look at port hours, sea days and the evenings you expect to spend aboard.

Open the deck plan for each exact ship. Identify the places you would use: an outdoor area, a quiet lounge, a gym, restaurants or entertainment venues. Then inspect the cabin’s location relative to them. A ship-wide reputation is less useful than knowing whether the room and spaces you want exist on your chosen vessel.

If travelling with friends, agree on the parts of the day you expect to share. One group may want dinner together and separate afternoons; another may want most activities together. Choose a ship where that pattern is easy to arrange.

Put the fares on the same basis

Celebrity’s All Included FAQ separates its drinks-and-Wi-Fi fare from other expenses. Compare the actual Celebrity quote with the inclusions and conditions on your Virgin quote, rather than assuming either brand name means everything is prepaid.

List the cabin total, internet, expected paid drinks, gratuities and the dinners you would buy. Keep travel to the port in the same comparison. If a fare includes a credit, count only the part you expect to use on eligible purchases.

A preference for a dining style or entertainment programme can justify a higher price, but name that preference. “Better for adults” is too broad to explain why one holiday is worth more to you.

Make the final choice around one priority

If avoiding children throughout the ship is essential, start with Virgin. If a Celebrity sailing has the route or room you particularly want, judge it on those merits. When both look appealing, choose the cruise with the stronger combination of itinerary, cabin and total cost for the way your group actually travels.
