Fare packages and inclusions
Virgin Voyages Bar Tab: how much should you buy?
The short answer
Treat Bar Tab as prepaid spending credit, not an unlimited drinks package. Buy it only when the amount and any confirmed bonus fit purchases you expect to make.

Virgin’s Bar Tab FAQ describes credit for eligible premium beverages onboard and at its Bimini Beach Club. Unused credit is non-refundable at the end of the voyage. Bar Tab must be bought before sailing, with the published cutoff 24 hours before departure.
That unused-balance rule matters more than a tempting bonus. Paying for a large tab that you do not use can cost more than buying your preferred drinks individually. Do not plan to consume more simply to empty the balance.
Estimate by the kind of day you will have
Separate sea days from long port days. Write down likely paid coffees, mocktails, wine or other eligible drinks using current menu prices where available. Exclude drinks already covered by your fare and purchases outside Bar Tab’s rules.
Next, look at the people who will use the credit under the current sharing rules. Avoid calculating for everyone in your travel group unless the terms allow the arrangement you intend. If another offer already provides Bar Tab credit, include that before buying more.
For an invented example, suppose you expect $260 of eligible purchases. An offer costing $300 cannot save you money on that plan merely because it adds a bonus. If a smaller available offer covers the expected spend at a lower cost, that is the relevant comparison. These figures explain the method, not a current Virgin promotion.
Do not turn a bonus into a spending target
Check the offer in your account for the actual paid amount, credit amount and any restrictions. Promotional bonuses change, so a screenshot from another sailing is not a reliable quote.
Leave room for your preferences to change. You might spend more time ashore, decide you prefer included beverages or simply want fewer paid drinks than expected. A conservative estimate protects you from paying for a holiday routine you never follow.
If the arithmetic is close, paying as you go may be worth the flexibility. A prepaid tab can still be convenient, but convenience and savings are different reasons to buy.
Keep Bimini in the same budget
If your sailing includes Virgin’s Beach Club at Bimini, plan that day’s eligible beverage spending alongside the ship days. Do not count the same credit twice, once as an onboard benefit and again as an island allowance.
Check the balance during the voyage rather than waiting until the final evening. If credit remains, use it only for something you actually want and that the rules permit. Leaving a small balance unused is preferable to making unnecessary purchases or drinking more than you intended.
