Choosing a cruise

Are repositioning cruises worth it? Check these costs first

By Cruise.do · Updated

The short answer

A repositioning cruise can offer an interesting route and a low advertised nightly fare. Its value depends on the flight home, time away and whether you will enjoy the sea days. Compare the complete journey before treating the cruise price as a bargain.

What you are booking

A repositioning sailing moves a ship between operating regions. It starts and finishes in different places; crossing the Atlantic is one possible route, not the definition. Norwegian’s explanation also describes Pacific Coast, Panama Canal and transpacific examples.

Check the embarkation and final ports carefully. A country or region heading is not an airport. Save the exact terminal, nearest practical airports and final arrival date before you price the rest of the journey.

Put the flight home in the first calculation

Build a complete transport quote while the cabin is still available. Compare a multi-city flight itinerary with separate one-way tickets, allowing for baggage, overnight connections and the ground transfer at each end. A low cruise fare cannot tell you whether those flights will be economical.

Add hotels before boarding and after arrival when your travel plan needs them. Then include all cruise nights of service charges and any daily packages. A small daily cost becomes a substantial line item on a long sailing.

Use the total to compare with a shorter round trip you would otherwise book. The question is whether the extra days are days you want, not whether division produces the smallest nightly number.

Read the longest stretch without a port

Count consecutive sea days, not just the total. Six together feel different from six spread between shore visits. Imagine an ordinary afternoon when outdoor decks are unappealing: would you enjoy reading, a class, an indoor lounge or a long lunch?

If you need to work, check the internet offer and accept that a ship connection may be interrupted. If a fixed appointment requires reliable connectivity, do not make the crossing your only way to attend. Download leisure reading and entertainment before boarding rather than using a paid package for every spare hour.

Check what changes between regions

The departure climate and arrival climate may need different clothes. Plan laundry and baggage around the whole route. Review entry and transit requirements for your nationality using the relevant official authorities before you commit to flights.

Ask the line about any advertised changes to onboard programming during the voyage. Do not assume that a repositioning trip will sail half empty or have discounted extras. Book it when the route and time onboard appeal to you even after the full cost is on the page.
