Cruise laundry: Princess vs Royal Caribbean

By Cruise.do · Updated

The short answer

Princess describes self-service launderettes as well as paid laundry. Royal Caribbean says it does not provide self-service laundry and offers washing, pressing and dry cleaning instead. Check your ship’s current facilities and service form before deciding how little to pack.

The difference that changes your packing list

Princess’s onboard FAQ lists washers, dryers and laundry products in self-service rooms, along with paid laundry and professional cleaning. It notes that environmental restrictions can affect launderette hours on some itineraries.

Royal Caribbean’s laundry FAQ says there are no self-service laundry facilities. It offers paid services and describes wash-and-fold specials whose availability may vary. Do not transfer a packing plan based on Princess launderettes to a Royal Caribbean sailing without allowing for that difference.

Decide what can safely go in the wash

Read garment care labels before packing. Keep delicate fabrics, items that must air-dry and clothes you cannot risk shrinking out of a general wash-and-fold plan. If a particular treatment matters, ask whether the ship offers it and how it is charged.

For self-service, take clothes you already know how to wash together. An unfamiliar machine on a busy sea day is an inconvenient place to discover that two favourite garments need separate cycles. Leave time to stay nearby and collect the load promptly.

For paid service, review the actual order form and count the pieces you hand over. Photograph the completed form for your own reference. A bag offer may cover only specified items; confirm the conditions rather than stuffing it with every dirty garment.

Build in a return-time margin

Ask when a load handed in today will come back and what the final collection day is. Plan around the answer for your sailing, not a turnaround quoted in an old forum post.

Keep enough underwear, socks and usable outfits for the period while laundry is away, plus a spare. Do not send your only dinner clothes or the outfit you need for the flight home on the last possible day. For a longer trip, a planned wash in the middle can be more useful than a desperate one near the end.

Do the packing calculation

Lay out the clothes needed until your intended wash day, then add the service interval. Compare the luggage space saved with the expected laundry bill and any extra airline baggage cost. A small paid load may make sense even when the ship has no machines for guests.

Leave personal irons and garment steamers at home where the line prohibits them. Princess identifies ironing facilities in its laundry rooms; Royal Caribbean offers pressing. Confirm the option you will use before packing clothes that require careful treatment every evening.
