Packing guide
Cruise carry-on checklist for embarkation day
The short answer
Pack your embarkation carry-on for the hours before your checked luggage reaches you. Keep boarding essentials and anything difficult to replace with you; add the items needed for your first planned activity.

Norwegian’s preparation guidance advises keeping essentials with you while checked luggage is delivered. Royal Caribbean’s packing guidance also describes planning for boarding day with a day bag. [1] [2] The checklist below is our practical synthesis, not a universal baggage policy.
| Need | What to keep accessible |
|---|---|
| Boarding | The travel documents and boarding information required for your booking. |
| Personal essentials | Your prescribed medication, glasses and other items you rely on. |
| Communication | Phone, charging cable, saved contacts and confirmation details. |
| Payment and valuables | Your payment method and valuables you would not leave in a checked bag. |
| Comfort | A change of clothes or light layer, chosen for your travel day. |
Check entry and boarding requirements for your nationality, route and circumstances with the cruise line and relevant authorities. This checklist does not establish which documents will be accepted.
Pack for the first thing you want to do
If you want to use the pool after boarding, put your swimsuit, sunscreen and sunglasses in the bag you keep. Royal Caribbean specifically recommends thinking about pool access before your checked luggage arrives. [2]
If your priority is lunch and a quiet afternoon, you may prefer a lighter bag. Pack for a plausible first day rather than carrying everything you own around the terminal. Keep the items you will reach for most in an accessible pocket.
Make the checklist work for your party
For children, our suggestion is to bring the supplies and familiar comfort item needed while checked bags are unavailable. For access needs, keep essential equipment and its accessories with the person who uses them. Confirm handling arrangements directly with the cruise line where needed.
Each adult should know where their own boarding information is. If one person organizes everything, agree what happens if you become separated in the terminal or one phone runs out of power. Keep sensitive documents secure rather than putting them in a shared public note.
Check baggage rules separately
A useful packing list does not replace the rules for your cruise line, departure port or airline. Before packing liquids, electrical items, batteries, beverages or food, consult the applicable restrictions. Weight and dimensions may differ between the flight and the ship.
Repack after the flight if necessary: a bag that made sense on the aircraft may leave a swimsuit, cable or document in the wrong place for embarkation. Label checked bags according to the line’s instructions, and follow your assigned arrival arrangements.
The two-minute check before handing over bags
- Can every traveler board without opening a checked suitcase?
- Can everyone manage the time until luggage delivery?
- Is the next activity possible with what you are carrying?
- Can you carry the day bag comfortably through boarding?
Save the checklist before travel so you can use it without a signal. Adjust it to your own booking rather than assuming every ship follows the same delivery schedule.
