Boarding and life onboard
Self-assist vs checked luggage on cruise departure morning
The short answer
Choose self-assist only if everyone in your group can manage all their luggage through the ship and terminal. Choose the luggage service when carrying bags is the harder part of the journey. Neither option guarantees a particular airport arrival time.

Royal Caribbean describes self-assist as carrying your own bags off and regular departure as using the luggage service with an assigned departure time. Its guidance also states that wheelchair assistance is not provided in the self-assist programme. Other lines may have different arrangements.
Think about the full route, including queues, lifts, ramps and the terminal. Being able to roll a case along a hotel corridor is not the whole test.
When carrying everything works
Self-assist is a reasonable fit for travellers with modest bags who can move as one group. Pack the night before and test the arrangement: one person should not need to pull three cases while carrying a sleepy child.
Keep both hands available where possible. If the plan depends on finding a porter immediately inside the ship, it is not truly self-assist. Ask your line about assistance before choosing a departure method.
When the luggage service is easier
With regular departure, follow the ship's tagging and collection instructions precisely. Keep morning clothes, shoes, documents, medicines and valuables in your small bag. Photograph the tags and cases before collection.
Allow time to find every bag in the terminal. Similar colours and matching luggage brands are common, so read the name label before leaving. A distinctive ribbon can help you spot a case, but the label is the final check.
Do not use an early flight to force the decision
Work backwards from the airline's required airport arrival, including terminal clearance and the road journey. The ship's scheduled arrival is not the time passengers are guaranteed to leave.
Ask the cruise line for its recommended earliest flight for your port and sailing. If your flight cannot accommodate ordinary disembarkation delays, changing the flight is a stronger solution than relying on being first off. Keep your driver updated using an actual pickup arrangement rather than an optimistic guessed time.
