Cruise luggage tags and checked bags: a boarding-day plan

By Cruise.do · Updated

The short answer

Tag the bags you intend to check, keep documents and essentials with you, and assume your main suitcase may arrive after you board. Check the final cabin assignment before printing tags, particularly with a guarantee booking.

Prepare tags after the cabin is confirmed

Use the luggage labels supplied for your actual reservation. Compare the sailing date, ship and cabin number before attaching them. If an upgrade or reassignment changes the cabin, replace the old labels rather than leaving contradictory information on the handle.

A photo of each suitcase helps you describe it if it is delayed. Put a contact label inside as well as outside, without displaying a full home address unnecessarily.

Make a deliberate carry-on choice

Royal Caribbean allows guests to carry or check their luggage. Carrying everything sounds efficient until you are looking for lunch with two large cases and a cabin that is not yet available. Checking everything creates the opposite problem if your documents, medicines or charger are buried inside.

Choose a small bag that you can manage through security and around the ship. Keep valuables and items needed that afternoon in it.

Separate airline and ship rules

A cruise luggage policy does not override your airline's bag allowance. If you are flying, pack to the strictest relevant limit on the journey. Review the cruise line's prohibited-items list separately, including electrical equipment and drinks, rather than assuming airport approval means ship approval.

If you plan to swim soon after boarding, put swimwear and a change of clothes in the small bag. Otherwise, avoid carrying an entire second wardrobe for a few hours.

At the terminal and in the cabin

Use the designated luggage handover point and check that every bag has the right label before walking away. Keep any receipt or reference supplied. Do not leave a bag simply because it is beside other suitcases.

Once aboard, ask about a missing bag through the ship's stated process. Your useful details are the cabin, bag colour, size, brand and tag information. Avoid repeatedly waiting at guest services while normal delivery is still underway.
