NCL Free at Sea vs Plus: what is worth upgrading?

By Cruise.do · Updated

The short answer

Free at Sea Plus is worth examining if you need more internet access and will use its other additions. First check the package already on your reservation and whether service charges are already paid.

Start with the booking you actually have

NCL’s current package page distinguishes Free at Sea from Free at Sea Plus. The base offer lists 150 Wi-Fi minutes per guest, while Plus adds unlimited streaming Wi-Fi, enhanced beverages and a discount on additional specialty dining. Plus has versions with and without prepaid service charges, depending on the reservation.

Older offer names and screenshots can describe different benefits. Open your confirmation and compare its wording with the upgrade shown in your account. If the service charge is already included elsewhere, do not count it again as new value from Plus.

Someone who only wants to send a few messages may use connectivity very differently from someone expecting regular video calls. Write down what you need to do, then compare the standalone internet upgrade with the complete Plus quote. Neither a package name nor “streaming” is a promise that every connection will be reliable enough for time-critical work.

Check the restrictions that affect your trip

The official promotion terms distinguish onboard benefits from island use and set the eligibility rules for dining discounts. Check these details before treating a shore day as another day of full package use.

An additional-dining discount only saves money if you book an eligible meal you wanted in the first place. It also does not remove the need to obtain a reservation. Count the dinner as optional until you know the restaurant and time suit your plans.

Compare the cabin total, not the daily headline

Multiply the quoted upgrade by the number of charged days and eligible guests. Then subtract only costs that genuinely disappear, such as an internet upgrade you would otherwise buy. Use the exact checkout total if taxes, fees or promotional terms change the calculation.

Keep a separate line for the value of convenience. Some travellers prefer paying in advance even when the arithmetic is close; others would rather buy fewer extras. Both are reasonable choices when the trade-off is clear.

If the offer is confusing, ask NCL or your agent for an itemised before-and-after quote. A written list of what changes is more useful than an assurance that the higher package includes “everything.”
