How to use airplane mode and Wi-Fi on a cruise

By Cruise.do · Updated

The short answer

At sea, switch on airplane mode and then enable Wi-Fi to use the ship’s network. Follow your line’s login instructions. Connecting to ship Wi-Fi does not by itself mean you have purchased internet access or that every app will work.

Set it up before sailaway

Norwegian tells guests to use airplane mode or disable cellular data, then enable Wi-Fi when connecting to its onboard app. Airplane mode is the clearer starting point because it avoids leaving ordinary cellular connections active by mistake.

Check the visible settings rather than assuming the phone remembered your last trip. Turn Wi-Fi back on after airplane mode, select the network identified by the ship and follow its login page.

Separate the ship network from the internet

A phone can connect to the ship's local network while having no general internet access. The cruise line may make selected app functions available through that network; social media, email and other apps may still require an internet package.

Test the functions you need while staff can help. A messaging feature inside one line's app does not tell you whether another messaging app works. Agree on a physical meeting place as a backup.

Know what happens when you go ashore

Before restoring cellular service, check that your mobile plan covers the country and the kind of use you intend. Ship cellular service and land roaming are separate questions for your provider. Do not assume a plan marketed for international travel covers maritime networks.

If you choose to use land data, remember to restore your at-sea settings before the ship departs. A recurring reminder near your return time can save you from forgetting after a busy port day.

Prepare the useful files at home

Download boarding information, transport details and any maps you expect to need. Open them once in airplane mode to check that they are actually stored, rather than simply bookmarked. Disable automatic photo uploads and large updates if your connection is limited.
