Mediterranean port decisions
Naples cruise day: Pompeii or Capri?
The short answer
Choose Pompeii for archaeology and a substantial visit on foot. Choose Capri for an island outing and scenery, accepting ferry schedules and possible weather disruption. Trying to combine both on a normal port call leaves little room for either.

Pompeii needs time inside the site
Use the archaeological park’s official ticket and opening information before choosing a tour. Check the entrance, ticket category and what is included. A broad Pompeii label can cover very different visits.
Decide what you want to understand or see, then choose a manageable route. A guide can give structure to a short visit, while an independent visit requires more preparation. Either way, allow for walking, rest and the conditions on the day.
Capri begins with a ferry plan
SNAV operates hydrofoil services to Capri. Check departures for your date and the correct Naples terminal. A seat on a crossing gets you to the island; it does not include all the transport or attractions you may want once there.
Choose one main island activity. A boat trip, town visit and several transfers can quickly turn a relaxed idea into a chain of connections.
Compare the failure points
For Pompeii, examine road or rail connections, the site entry and the return journey. For Capri, add the possibility of ferry changes and the time required to get back to the island's departure point.
Read cancellation terms before paying for separate components. If the first service is delayed, the second operator may not consider that its responsibility. An organised excursion may coordinate the pieces, but its description should say exactly what is covered.
Choose for the group, then protect the return
A traveller who wants history may find a rushed island photo stop unsatisfying; someone who wants water and scenery may not enjoy hours at an archaeological site. Ask the group which experience is the priority before comparing deals.
Set a return plan with room for delays and avoid using the last possible ferry or train as the foundation. If conditions make the chosen outing impractical, a Naples city visit is a useful fallback. Do not force the original plan simply because it took time to research.
