Kagoshima cruise port: should you visit Sakurajima?
The short answer
The Sakurajima ferry crossing is short, but it is only one part of the excursion. Add the journey from your cruise berth, waiting and transport on the island before deciding that a volcano visit fits.

Kagoshima’s official visitor guide gives approximately 15 minutes for the Sakurajima ferry crossing. That is the time across the water, not a complete trip from the cruise ship to a viewpoint. The city ferry guide also explains access to the city-side ferry terminal.
First identify where your cruise docks and how passengers reach the city. Then choose what you want to do after the ferry arrives. A vague plan to “see the volcano” leaves the most important part unresolved: where you will go, how you will get there and how long you will stay.
Choose a short island visit or a more involved excursion
A short visit can focus on one accessible stop near your chosen transport route. A longer outing may combine viewpoints or other island sights. Ask an excursion operator how much of the advertised duration is driving and whether the main stop gives you time outside the vehicle.
For an independent visit, plan the island transport before buying the ferry ticket. Do not assume a taxi will be waiting whenever you need one or that a bus timetable fits the cruise call. Keep a fallback that returns you to the ferry without needing to complete a full circuit.
If several people have different walking tolerances, discuss that before departure. A viewpoint visit with a clear meeting place may work better than splitting up after arrival and discovering that nobody has agreed on the return crossing.
Leave room for conditions to change
A volcano landscape comes with changing local conditions. Check current access notices and follow the instructions at the places you visit. Do not build an itinerary around entering an area simply because an older blog shows photographs from it.
If the weather hides the view, decide whether the ferry ride and island visit still appeal. If they do not, a city day may be the more enjoyable use of limited shore time. That choice is easier when you have made it before paying for several separate transfers.
Work backwards from all-aboard: terminal arrival, city transfer, return ferry, then the final island activity. Allow room for a missed connection. You should be able to describe the return journey without relying on “we will work it out when we get there.”
