Connecting vs adjoining cruise cabins: check the door

By Cruise.do · Updated

The short answer

Do not book two rooms on the strength of the word adjoining. Confirm the exact cabin numbers and the type of connection. Rooms next to each other are not necessarily joined by an interior door, and layouts differ between ships.

Ask for the physical connection

Disney defines connecting staterooms as two rooms sharing an interior door. That is a useful concrete description. On another ship, ask whether the connection is an interior door, a shared entrance arrangement or something else shown on its plan.

Use the exact room numbers when asking. A photograph of two connecting rooms elsewhere on the ship does not establish that your pair connects.

Check the deck-plan symbol

Open the plan for your sailing and find both cabins. Read the legend rather than guessing what an arrow or line means. Check bed arrangements and capacity for each room, including the ages of the people occupying it.

Then ask the booking agent to confirm the arrangement in writing. A note saying near each other is not equivalent to a confirmed connecting pair. Because Royal Caribbean warns that guarantee bookings may separate travelling parties, two guarantees are unsuitable when a specific connection is essential.

Think through mornings and bedtimes

The main gain from two rooms may be two bathrooms and a place for adults to sit after children sleep. Compare that with the real bedtime routine: who sleeps where, who needs the door open and who is responsible for each child.

Check the line's occupancy and supervision requirements before assigning rooms. Do not assume an arrangement that worked on a hotel booking is permitted on a cruise reservation.

Balcony dividers are a separate question

An opening between balconies, where available and permitted, is not a substitute for the interior access your family needs. Ask the line whether a divider can be opened for the exact pair and whether crew approval is required. Do not plan to open it yourself.

Before accepting a room change or upgrade, repeat the connection check. A larger cabin is not an improvement if it breaks the arrangement that made the family booking workable.
