Alaska cruise shoes: trainers, walking shoes or boots?

By Cruise.do · Updated

The short answer

For town visits and straightforward walks, comfortable walking shoes may be enough. For wet trails or an excursion with specific footwear requirements, follow those requirements. The useful question is what your feet need to do, not whether every Alaska cruise requires hiking boots.

Start with the ground you will cover

Separate your days into town pavements, maintained paths, uneven trails and specialist activities. Read the operator's equipment list for anything guided. A sightseeing bus tour does not justify the same footwear as a muddy hike simply because both take place in Alaska.

If you already own shoes that suit the terrain, test those first. Familiar footwear with a sound sole is often a better starting point than a new boot bought just before travel.

Think about water and drying

Princess advises packing for changing Alaska weather. Rain protection matters, but so does having something dry to wear afterward. Check what the manufacturer actually claims for your shoes rather than treating water-resistant and waterproof as identical.

Pack spare socks in a small protected bag for longer outdoor days. At the cabin, remove wet insoles if the shoe's care instructions allow it and give footwear time to air between uses.

Fit matters more than the label

Wear the intended socks when trying shoes. Walk down stairs and on an incline to see whether your toes hit the front or your heel lifts. Test the combination for longer than a few minutes around the shop.

Boots can add support or protection for a particular activity, but weight and stiffness can become a nuisance on ordinary town days. Do not assume a more technical-looking shoe will be more comfortable for you.

A two-pair decision

If luggage space permits, take one pair for the outdoor conditions you expect and a comfortable alternative for the ship and dry days. Choose the second pair to provide a real backup, rather than taking two equally unsuitable pairs.

Before packing bulky boots, ask whether the excursion supplies the equipment it requires. Before leaving them behind, confirm that your chosen alternative meets the operator's rules. That single check is more useful than a universal Alaska footwear list.
