Alaska cruise planning
Alaska cruises in May vs September: how to choose
The short answer
Choose May or September around the excursions and scenery you care about, then compare the complete trip price. Both sit near the edges of Alaska’s main cruise season. Neither month guarantees dry weather, uncrowded ports, wildlife sightings or a bargain.

Write one sentence about the trip you want: a scenic train ride, a whale excursion, time on outdoor decks or a land stay after the cruise. Then check whether that activity is sold on the dates you are comparing. A cheaper sailing is poor value if the one trip you wanted is unavailable.
Holland America describes May and September as shoulder months. Its overview associates May with cooler spring conditions and September with fall colours and some tour operators winding down. These are seasonal pointers, not a forecast or an availability calendar.
May: check the start of the operating season
For an early sailing, ask the actual excursion operator for its opening date and bookable departure time. A summer webpage with a prominent booking button does not prove a tour runs in the first week of May.
If your plan includes independent walks, check current trail conditions and the route’s opening status close to departure. A map describes where a path goes; it does not tell you whether you should use it that day. Keep a town-based alternative that does not depend on reaching a particular viewpoint.
September: check the end dates and usable light
For a late sailing, confirm the final operating date of each must-do tour. Separate the last cruise call from the last date a specific attraction or excursion runs. If a business closes before your visit, an earlier sailing may be worth more than a cabin discount.
Check local sunrise and sunset for each port and date when planning an independent outing. Northern lights should be a possible bonus, not the reason to buy a coastal cruise. Darkness alone cannot establish that sky conditions, aurora activity and your location will align.
For either month, leave room to change the day’s plan when the forecast changes. A dry indoor layer, weather protection and a short local option matter more than a promise of perfect shoulder-season weather.
Compare equal trips before choosing
Match the ports, glacier visit, cabin category and time ashore before comparing fares. Add flights, hotel nights and the shore activities you want. Two sailings in different months may also use different routes, so the month may not be the main reason one suits you better.
Pick the departure whose confirmed activities and travel arrangements work best. Keep the second-choice tour and operator contact details with your plan, so a weather change does not mean starting the day’s research again on a slow connection.
