# St. Thomas: Magens Bay or Charlotte Amalie?

By Cruise.do · Updated October 17, 2026

The short answer

Choose Magens Bay if a beach visit is your priority. Choose Charlotte Amalie if you want a town walk, shopping and a meal. Confirm the ship’s berth first because Havensight and Crown Bay create different starting points.

## [Your berth changes the first decision](#your-berth-changes-the-first-decision)

The [Virgin Islands Port Authority lists separate cruise arrival locations](#source-stthomas-berths), including Havensight and Crown Bay. Save the one assigned to your ship before agreeing to a pickup or copying someone else's walking route.

A map labelled Charlotte Amalie can hide the distance between the ship and the particular street or attraction you intend to visit. Ask the driver or operator to use the terminal name in the return plan.

## [Magens Bay is a beach commitment](#magens-bay-is-a-beach-commitment)

[The USVI tourism authority describes Magens Bay as a beach destination](#source-stthomas-beach). Plan for the journey, current admission arrangements, whatever facilities you need and the return ride. Do not assume a taxi fare includes beach entry or equipment.

Set the return pickup before settling in. If you want shade or seating, confirm availability rather than treating a photograph of a furnished beach as a reservation.

## [A town visit can stay flexible](#a-town-visit-can-stay-flexible)

Choose a small area of Charlotte Amalie and one or two things you actually want to see. Allow time to sit, especially in hot weather. Shopping can expand to fill a whole afternoon, so keep an eye on the return journey.

For anyone who finds slopes or uneven surfaces difficult, check the route to the specific attraction. A town described as walkable does not mean every street or historic site has an easy approach.

## [Can you fit both?](#can-you-fit-both)

Possibly, but work backwards from the ship. Give the beach enough time to justify the transfer and make town the optional part, or choose a short town visit followed by a prearranged beach outing with a clear return.

Avoid adding a second destination merely because the island looks small on a map. If the call is short or roads are busy, one well-chosen outing leaves more room to enjoy the stop. The right choice is the day you want, with transport that supports it.
