# Marseille cruise day: reach the Vieux-Port and keep it simple

By Cruise.do · Updated October 17, 2026

The short answer

Begin by establishing how your cruise terminal connects to central Marseille. The Vieux-Port is a useful focus for a first visit, but it is not the cruise berth itself. A compact city plan is easier to manage than combining Marseille with a distant excursion.

## [Confirm the terminal and transfer](#confirm-the-terminal-and-transfer)

[Marseille Tourism’s cruise-port access guide](#source-marseille-port) explains the transport choices and the route to shuttle services. Read the instructions for your arrival location and check what your cruise line offers on the day.

Do not assume a free port shuttle and a paid cruise-line shuttle are the same service. Their stops, operating times and walking approaches may differ. Ask where you will be dropped off and where the return boards.

## [Use the Old Port as the centre of the day](#use-the-old-port-as-the-centre-of-the-day)

A first visit can be built around the Vieux-Port waterfront, a nearby walk and a meal. Choose one additional sight rather than a list spread across the city. If a hilltop viewpoint is important, plan its transport separately from the waterfront walk.

Consider what the group wants to do in the heat or rain. A long exposed walk and a seated lunch create different demands from several indoor visits.

## [Do not confuse a port transfer with a city tour](#do-not-confuse-a-port-transfer-with-a-city-tour)

A shuttle can solve the first and last journeys while leaving all sightseeing decisions to you. A guided tour may include commentary and a fixed route, but less freedom to linger. Compare the actual service rather than choosing by the word excursion.

For an independent timed booking, leave room between the expected city arrival and the start. The walk from a shuttle stop may be longer than the map appears to suggest.

## [When to skip the extra destination](#when-to-skip-the-extra-destination)

Adding another town or a lengthy outing beyond Marseille can turn the day into transport with a brief city glimpse at the end. Choose that only if the other destination is your real priority and the itinerary supports it.

For a city day, finish near the return connection and identify the correct stop before the last hour. Keep an earlier return option in mind. If the morning starts late, shorten the walk rather than assuming the afternoon bus queue will be shorter.
