# Dubrovnik cruise port to Old Town: a practical day plan

By Cruise.do · Updated October 17, 2026

The short answer

For a Gruz arrival, organise the connection to the Old Town before choosing sights. Make either the walls or a slower town visit your main plan, then add only what the port hours and your walking pace allow.

## [Gruz and the Old Town are separate stops](#gruz-and-the-old-town-are-separate-stops)

[Dubrovnik Port Authority describes public transport from the port to Pile](#source-dubrovnik-bus), beside the Old Town. Its estimated bus journey depends on traffic and does not include waiting, walking or terminal access.

Compare the public service with your line's shuttle or a taxi using the actual pickup and drop-off points. Keep the return stop or meeting location in your notes before entering the streets inside the walls.

## [Choose how much walking you want](#choose-how-much-walking-you-want)

Walking the walls is a different commitment from exploring streets and stopping for lunch. Check the current route, opening conditions, steps and ticket arrangements before deciding. Heat, sun and crowding can change how demanding the visit feels.

If someone in the party is unsure, choose a shorter plan with clear places to rest. You do not need to complete the most strenuous option to have a worthwhile visit.

## [Avoid a queue-filled combination](#avoid-a-queue-filled-combination)

Adding a cable-car trip, wall walk, museum and long lunch can look efficient on a map while leaving little flexibility. Choose one timed or paid priority, then make the remaining walk optional.

Read what each ticket includes and whether it is useful for the time you actually have. A broad pass can be good value for a longer stay but unnecessary for a visitor who will enter only one attraction.

## [Finish near your return connection](#finish-near-your-return-connection)

Work back toward the correct exit before the final part of the afternoon. Allow for the walk through the Old Town, the queue for transport and traffic back to the port. A bus ride that was quick in the morning may take longer later.

Check the berth and ship details when boarding the return transport. If you arrived by tender rather than at Gruz, use that landing's instructions instead. The best route is the one built for your arrival arrangement, not somebody else's photograph of the harbour.
