Cabins, dining and costs

# Is specialty dining worth it on a cruise?

By Cruise.do · Updated October 17, 2026

The short answer

Specialty dining is worth considering when a particular menu or occasion appeals to you. It is not essential just because it costs extra. Start with one restaurant you would actively choose, then compare the full bill with the included alternatives.

[Royal Caribbean offers included and specialty venues](#source-rc-food). [Norwegian’s specialty dining terms](#source-ncl-specialty) also distinguish package conditions and availability. Neither tells you whether your party will enjoy a particular menu.

Look at dishes each person would order, portion style and whether a tasting menu or long meal suits the group. A steakhouse is poor value for a party whose preferences are better served elsewhere.

Check service charges, drinks, menu supplements and the rules for children. If using a package, confirm which venues and meals it covers and whether reservations remain necessary. A package entitlement is not the same as a confirmed table.

Compare the final price for your whole party. A per-person headline can look modest until it is multiplied across a family and several evenings.

If you are unsure, one carefully chosen dinner can be a better experiment than filling every evening with reservations. Keep another evening free for the included dining room and judge what you actually enjoy.

Consider the itinerary. A port-heavy sailing with long excursions may leave less appetite for lengthy meals. A sea day can offer more room for a celebration without rushing from a late return to a shower and then to dinner.

## [What would make it a disappointing purchase?](#what-would-make-it-a-disappointing-purchase)

Common mismatches are an unsuitable menu, a reservation that clashes with a show, or expecting every dish and drink to be included. Clarify those points before paying. For allergies or dietary requirements, speak with the line and restaurant about what can be provided.

Keep the cancellation deadline with the booking. If plans change, release the table through the proper channel. Paying for a meal that the group no longer wants is not a way to improve the holiday.
