# Can you bring a power strip on a cruise? What to check

By Cruise.do · Updated October 17, 2026

The short answer

For Royal Caribbean, do not pack a power strip, extension cord or multi-plug outlet. Its current policy lists those items as prohibited and separately allows qualifying device and USB chargers. “Cruise approved” in a shop listing is not permission from your cruise line.

## [Read the line’s rule before shopping](#read-the-line-s-rule-before-shopping)

[Royal Caribbean’s current prohibited-items policy](#source-royal-electrical-2026) distinguishes power strips and multi-plug outlets from device and USB chargers marked with a recognised US or European conformity certification. Security retains discretion over items brought onboard. Check the latest rule for your own line, including any updated wording before departure.

Removing surge protection does not automatically make a power strip acceptable. Nor does a label on a product page establish permission for your ship. If the item creates additional household AC sockets, compare it with the prohibited categories before buying it.

## [Make a device list instead of buying a gadget bundle](#make-a-device-list-instead-of-buying-a-gadget-bundle)

List what must charge each day: phones, a watch, a camera and perhaps a tablet. Write the required cable connector beside each device. A drawer full of adapters is less useful than the correct cable for the item you depend on.

Check your cabin’s available sockets and USB connections using ship-specific information. A sister ship or a cabin in another category may have a different arrangement. Do not plan around a bedside socket unless you have confirmed one exists.

Test the charger and cables at home with the devices you intend to bring. Read the manufacturer’s input and output ratings. A plug-shape adapter does not change voltage; equipment must be suitable for the supply it will use.

## [Plan when devices will charge](#plan-when-devices-will-charge)

You may not need to charge everything at once. A watch can charge while you get ready for dinner, and a camera battery while you are in the cabin later. Keeping a simple sequence can reduce the number of accessories you pack.

Arrange cables so they do not cross the walking route between the bed and bathroom. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions and the ship’s directions on safe charging. Replace a damaged cable before travelling, rather than relying on it for a week away.

## [Ask about essential equipment early](#ask-about-essential-equipment-early)

If you need an electrical arrangement for essential equipment, contact the cruise line’s accessibility or guest-services team before sailing. Describe the equipment and the connection you need, and ask for written instructions. Do not assume you can bring a prohibited extension lead because it solves the problem at home.

Save the reply with your travel documents. Pack a small set of permitted chargers and the exact cables you tested. That is a more dependable plan than buying a multi-socket accessory on the strength of a marketplace search result.
