# How to budget for cruise gratuities and service charges

By Cruise.do · Updated October 17, 2026

The short answer

Build the budget from your booking’s current terms: the daily charge for each applicable guest, the number of charged days, and any separate gratuities on purchases. Check whether your fare already includes or prepays them before adding them again.

## [Start with the booking, not a viral price list](#start-with-the-booking-not-a-viral-price-list)

[Norwegian lists service charges among items outside its basic cruise fare](#source-ncl-inclusions). A package or promotion can change what your particular booking includes, so read the confirmation and current line policy together.

Find the applicable guest ages, cabin category and sailing date. A rate from another category or an earlier booking may not apply. Keep a copy of the terms you used so that you can reconcile the account onboard.

## [Use a simple calculation](#use-a-simple-calculation)

For each guest who is subject to the charge, multiply the applicable daily amount by the charged days. Add those guest totals, then subtract amounts already prepaid or included. If different people or cabins have different rates, calculate them separately.

Do not insert a guessed fleetwide figure. A blank marked check current rate is more honest, and more useful, than a confident number that leaves the household budget short.

## [Separate automatic charges from extra thanks](#separate-automatic-charges-from-extra-thanks)

Daily service charges, restaurant or beverage gratuities and an optional personal tip are different lines in the budget. Before adding a tip to a receipt, read whether a service amount is already included. You can then make a deliberate choice about anything extra.

An onboard-credit offer may have restrictions. Do not assume it will pay a service charge unless the terms for that specific credit say so. Ask the line to clarify any ambiguous wording before departure.

## [Review the account early](#review-the-account-early)

Look at the account during the cruise so that a missing prepayment or unexpected charge can be discussed while staff can investigate. Keep receipts and booking confirmations available.

For a group, decide in advance whether each cabin pays its own extras or one person is organising a shared budget. That avoids an awkward final-night conversation. This page is a budgeting method; the cruise line's current booking terms determine the amounts and how charges are handled.
