Boarding and life onboard

# Cruise embarkation day: what to do first

By Cruise.do · Updated October 17, 2026

The short answer

Use boarding day for four jobs: get through the terminal, complete your safety briefing, eat, and check any reservations that matter. Leave the full ship tour until you have put your bags down.

## [Start with your terminal slot](#start-with-your-terminal-slot)

Your ship's departure time is not your arrival appointment. [Royal Caribbean asks guests to arrive within their selected terminal slot](#source-rc-arrival). Build the journey around that appointment, including traffic and the correct terminal entrance. Keep travel documents and the boarding pass where you can reach them without opening a suitcase.

Before leaving the hotel, give everyone one job: documents, bags or transport. Repacking on the pavement is a miserable start, especially with children waiting in the heat.

Once aboard, look up the safety instructions and your assigned station. On Royal Caribbean, the [briefing includes a station visit](#source-rc-muster); watching the video alone does not finish it. Ask a crew member if the app has not recorded a family member correctly.

Next, deal with one genuinely important reservation, such as dinner for a large group. Do not join every queue just because other people are queuing. Some errands can wait until later in the sailing.

## [Choose lunch around your luggage](#choose-lunch-around-your-luggage)

Check today's dining list for a venue that is open and included in your fare. A restaurant photographed on a ship tour may not serve embarkation lunch. If your cabin is not ready, pick somewhere you can sit comfortably with your carry-on beside you.

Keep the afternoon flexible. A swimming costume in your small bag makes a pool visit possible, but a nap, drink of water or quiet lunch may be more welcome after a long journey.

## [Before the first evening](#before-the-first-evening)

When your cabin opens, check the beds, bags and any essential equipment before unpacking everything. Report a missing suitcase with its description and tag details. Then choose one evening activity and a realistic dinner time.

Our suggested order is safety, food, cabin, then entertainment. It is an order of priorities, not an official timetable. Crew announcements and the day's programme take precedence, including any change to the sailaway arrangements.
