# Should you take the mainland ferry on a Cozumel cruise stop?

By Cruise.do · Updated October 17, 2026

The short answer

A mainland trip adds a ferry crossing and usually more ground travel to a Cozumel port day. Choose it for a specific priority, with a well-supported schedule. For a relaxed beach or town visit, staying on Cozumel usually requires less coordination.

## [Count every leg before buying the attraction](#count-every-leg-before-buying-the-attraction)

[Ultramar operates the Cozumel and Playa del Carmen passenger route](#source-ultramar). Your day still has more steps than that crossing: cruise berth to ferry terminal, boarding, crossing, mainland transport and the entire journey back.

Write the complete sequence beside the ship's all-aboard time. A listing that quotes only the attraction visit or driving time can hide a substantial part of the day.

## [Look at the return first](#look-at-the-return-first)

Check the return ferries for your date before choosing the outward departure. Work out how early you must leave the mainland attraction to catch a suitable service, and what alternative exists if that service is delayed or unavailable.

Do not plan around the last theoretically possible connection. The return ferry arriving in Cozumel is not the same as arriving at your cruise gangway. You may still need road transport and terminal access.

## [Compare an organised excursion honestly](#compare-an-organised-excursion-honestly)

Ask whether a cruise-line excursion coordinates the ferry and ground transport, what its return policy covers, and how much actual time it gives at the attraction. A long excursion is not necessarily a long visit.

For an independent booking, ask the operator how it handles a late ship arrival, changed ferry service or cancelled port call. Read the cancellation and refund terms rather than relying on a reassuring sales message.

## [When staying on the island is the better choice](#when-staying-on-the-island-is-the-better-choice)

Choose an island day when the mainland activity is only a vague preference, when the call is short, or when multiple transfers would dominate the outing. A beach, town walk or local attraction may deliver more time doing what you enjoy.

If the mainland site is the main reason for travelling, compare a land stay as well. It can allow an early start and a fuller visit without measuring the afternoon against the last acceptable ferry back to a ship.
