START WITH THE ANSWER

## How to plan a cruise: the practical approach

Start with your travel dates, departure port and total budget. Choose the exact ship and itinerary, check booking and travel requirements, then plan arrival, a day bag and one priority for each port. A printable trip brief helps keep those decisions together.

INSIDE YOUR GUIDE

## Useful now. Handy onboard.

- Start with the trip you want.

Before comparing ships, agree what a good week would feel like. Your first cruise does not need to include every attraction. A short list of priorities makes the trade-offs easier to see.

- Compare the actual sailing.

Cruise-line names are only a starting point. The ship, room, route and fare conditions determine the trip you are buying.

- Make the days before departure easy.

Work backwards from boarding. The key is to remove decisions that would otherwise land on you at the terminal.

- Board with a small, useful day bag.

Royal Caribbean recommends a small day bag for the first hours aboard. Pack around what you would need if your checked case were not immediately available.

- Plan one priority per day.

Build a trip that can flex. One anchor activity and a few optional ideas are easier to adapt than an hour-by-hour wish list.

- Your one-page trip brief

Fill this in before departure. Keep sensitive documents separately; this sheet is a planning aid.

A SAMPLE FROM THE EBOOK

## Start with the trip you want.

### Pick three priorities

Write down three things your group wants: perhaps rest, family time and one beach day. Give each person a say before the itinerary starts filling up.

### Set your real travel window

Count the journey to the port and the journey home as part of the trip. Compare departure airports, transfer time and the flexibility you need if transport changes.

### Choose a comfortable pace

Compare time aboard with time ashore. A busy port schedule can mean more early starts; extra sea days give you more time to enjoy the ship.

### Write a spending ceiling

Separate the cruise quote from transport, hotel nights, optional purchases and a contingency. Use the full-trip figure when comparing options.
